Should Video Games be Censored?
The Points I want to Cover:
1.-Current enforcement of Censorship – Retailer Policies – what Needs to be censored.
2.-Current Major Censorship ratings (UK) – Compare to American Ratings. Or Rest of Europe (more appropriate?)
3.-People that believe Video Games encourage violent behaviour, and censorship is necessary, and should be enforced.
4-.People that believe Video Game do not encourage violent behaviour, and censorship should be loosened/seen as just a guideline.
http://www.gamecensorship.com/ : a good reference site containing tons of articles referring to game censorship.
1. United Kingdom Uses PEGI: http://www.pegi.info/en/index/id/33/ , then some rating responsibility’s also go to BBFC: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-108hr669ih/pdf/BILLS-108hr669ih.pdf – “The Protect Children from Video Game Sex and Violence Act of 2003.” Cant seem to find how appropriate this bill is today.( BARE IN MIND THIS IS AMERICAN)
It seems that in the past years there has been numerous attempts on passing laws to enforce censorship to almost over the top proportions, however never seem to actually pass.
A varied response on the stricter side of game censorship, blaming the parents however one notable quote: ‘’ It’s illegal to allow children to play restricted video games, even in your own home.’’ This blew my mind, and I deem impossible to actually enforce this unless dobbed in by the parents that have obviously bought the game but didn’t understand its content, begging the question, if they don’t understand the content then perhaps the rating system is floored in that its hard to make sense of the vague ratings. (New Zealand and Australia)
3. http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2007-04-25/games-do-cause-violent-behavior-but-not-much-businessweek-business-news-stock-market-and-financial-advice I have struggled to find actual relevant backed up evidence on how video game DO cause aggression, ofcourse there are a lot of opinions supporting this but this is the closest non closed minded approach on the matter.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/the-lay-scientist/2012/nov/20/games-psychology A good video presentation fighting for the fact that there still (video posted 20 Nov 2012) is no sufficient supporting evidence that video games encourage violent behaviour.

Do Video Games perpetuate gender and racial stereotypes?
The Points I want to cover:
1.-Examples of Race dependant stereotypes in Video Games, believing this is the most noticeable. Religious Beliefs may also come into it.
2.-Are there any current laws on placing potentially controversial material in games, does this more vary from country to country of design origin (where designed), and has there been any banned material.
3.-Are all of these stereotypes bad? Are some just trying to target the audience the game was made for?
A very complex document to goes into the analysis of gender and racial comparisons in games of the time.
http://www.complex.com/video-games/2012/05/the-15-most-stereotypical-characters-in-video-games/sgt-avery-johnson-halo A Top 15 countdown of some of gaming’s most stereotypical characters, mainly relevant due to the amount of varying stereotypes they have including both gender and racial.
3. http://www.giantbomb.com/racial-stereotypes/92-2804/ only for just the single sentence on this page, but it raises a point none the less. ‘’A designer can use a racial stereotype to make a character easier to understand, though in the process the character often comes across as offensive and hurtful.’’
How do avatars affect the players experience within video games?
The points I want to cover:
1.-The Amount of customise options directly affects attachment to a created avatar.
2.-Is attachment possible? Has there been any unhealthily extreme examples.
3.-Video Game Addiction.
4.-Placing any avatar (customised or not) into an immersive storyline can still have desired effect.
5.-Character Design falls heavily under immersion techniques in games, designing a character to have relatable traits based upon the games target audience. List some others and how they work.
6.-In games that allow the player to design the appearance of the game character then take this character through the game making decision based on how they want their character to react, could be how they would act, or perhaps the complete opposite, The Good Vs Evil Complex. This an create a high level of emotional attachment.
